Theatre festival to stage 15 multiligual plays

A motley mix of 15 multilingual plays from across different genres will be staged at the 7th edition of the Centrestage theatre festival here.

Organised by National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), the 11-day long festival that begins on November 25 will host productions on plethora of themes in English, Hindi, Gujarati and Marathi with a dash on Malayalam, Sanskrit and Urdu.

"Centrestage is a celebration of the art of theatre in its myriad forms. We try to present theatre lovers an array of theatre through handpicked plays which reflect the diversity of language, stories, genres and performances. The festival is a true representative of the Mumbai spirit," Deepa Gahlot, Head - Programming (Theatre & Film), NCPA said.
 

Genres will range from comedy, drama, romance, social drama, besides and array of stand-up acts.

The festival will see participation by renowned theatre artistes like Pankaj Kapur, Zeeshan Ayub, Neil Bhoopalam, Anuvab Pal, Sumona Chakrabarti and Tannistha Chatterjee among others.

The themes of the plays vary from marital relationships and family bonds to dreams and true love.

Directed by Gurleen Judge, multi-lingual "Dohri Zindagi" is a love story in a homophobic society.

From Gujarati theatre will be "Do Deewane Shaher Mein" which is a story of a young couple who have high aspirations and discover life's irony at its humorous best.

'Qissebaazi' will blend storytelling and theatre to cull out multiple performances narrating tales from the 'Natya Shastra' to the 'Tilism-e-Hoshruba'.

Kalidasa's 'Abhigyanam Shakuntalam' will get a modern spin where the mythological characters of Shakuntala and Dushyant will be seen first in Mumbai and then in Cambridge.

The festival is scheduled to continue till December 4.
