In a freak incident, a thief drove off a car with a seven-year-old boy inside, but panicked and died several kilometres away from the crime scene when the kid started crying.

It is believed that during the incident, the boy's mother had parked the car outside her daughter's daycare here and had walked into the school leaving behind him in the car after which thief made away with the car, the Star reported.

"She left the boy in the car with the engine running when the thief got into the vehicle and drove it away," city police said.

It is understood that the thief panicked because the boy was crying continuously.

He then pulled over and fled on foot with a bag, containing an undisclosed amount of cash belonging to the mother.

However, after taking a few steps, he collapsed and died.

Police later found his body some 100 meter from the abandoned car.

The boy was safely reunited with his family after passers-by, who noticed him crying alone in the vehicle, contacted his father, the report said.

Police said the body of the suspect, who had several drug-related crime records, was sent to the Hospital here for a post-mortem, it said.
