Tiger killed in territorial fight near Pench

A young tiger was killed in a suspected territorial fight with another feline at Karmajhiri forest range in core area of Pench Tiger Reserve (PTR) near here, officials said today.

"The patrol party found the tiger dead at Karmajhiri range and passed on the information to us last evening," PTR Field Deputy Director KK Gurwani told PTI.

He said the tiger appeared about 3-4 years old and might have died two days back.

"We found the traces of another tiger nearby and also the remains of two cheetals (spotted deer) around preyed by it," the officer said.

Quoting the postmortem report, Pench Assistant Conservator of Forests K S Sengar said, "A rib of the tiger was found broken and injuries mark were present on its neck and other places. Besides, the striped animal's lungs were found to be dysfunctional."
 

He said the deceased feline had separated some months ago from its mother and had entered the territory of another tiger who killed it.

The carcass has been disposed of according to the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).

Sengar ruled out the possibility of poaching.
