Among five South Indian states, Tamil Nadu has the highest number of unmanned level crossings pegged at 333, following by 272 in Andhra Pradesh, the Lok Sabha was informed today.
In a written reply, Minister of state for railways Rajen Gohain said there were in total 4,943 unmanned level crossings (UMLCs)in the country.
Karnataka has 253 UMLCs, Kerala seven, Telangana 37, the Union Territory of Puducherry has two.
"During the year 2016-17, 119 UMLCs from Andhra Pradesh and 34 from Telangana was eliminated. During 2017-18, target is to remove 71 such level crossings from Andhra Pradesh and 16 from Telangana," the Minister said.
