Tamil Nadu government today told the Madras High Court that it is taking effective steps to constitute a high-level committee to formulate a comprehensive law to govern all private schools in the state.
The submission was made by the School Education Department when a petition by former union minister and PMK leader R Velu came up for hearing before the First Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana.
Velu sought cancellation of the recognition granted to various matriculation schools except those which are enjoying recognition of the Madras and Madurai Universities.
The government submitted that it is taking steps to constitute a high-level committee to formulate a comprehensive law to govern all private schools in the light of Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education Act-2010 and Right of Children to fee and compulsory Education Act-2009.
When the bench asked how much time it needed to constitute the committee, Advocate General A L Somayaji submitted he will verify with the government tomorrow as to what could be the outer limit of time period within which the necessary exercise is carried out.
Velu in his petition submitted that the Code of Regulations for Matriculation Schools was "deceitfully" issued by the government contrary to the provisions of Tamil Nadu Private Schools (Regulation) Act. The government has to do so legally by amending the Act, he submitted.
