Trio gets 4-year jail for enslaving tribal woman

Three persons were today sentenced to four years imprisonment by a court here for enslaving a 47-year old tribal woman and outraging her modesty in a hilly village in the district.

Principal District and Sessions Judge Sivagnanam also slapped a fine of Rs 2,000 on each of the three convicts -- Mayee, Murugapandi and Baskaran.

According to prosecution, government had given 3.13 acres of land to the tribal woman, Chokkiammal, in Kadaparikuzhi village near Periyakulam.

However, the land was allegedly encroached by the three men who also made the tribal woman a bonded labourer and work hard in her own land about a year ago.
 

She was treated like a slave and her modesty was also outraged by them.
