A senior Tripura state government official who was absconding following an accusation of rape by a woman, was today arrested from neighbouring Karimganj district of Assam, the police said.
Acting on a tip-off, sleuths of Tripura Police raided a house in Karimganj town and arrested Panna Ahmed (44), Deputy Director of Sports and Youth department of the state, West Tripura district SP Abhijit Saptarshi told reporters.
He would be brought here soon and produced before a court.
An woman filed an FIR on June 26 that Ahmed raped her when she went to his house at Ramnagar for renting the premises.
Tripura Government had suspended Ahmed from his job following accusation of rape.
The opposition Congress, BJP and Trinamool Congress organised several protest demonstrations before the house of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, who is also the home minister of the state.
