Electrification of Virudhunagar-Tirunelveli-Maniachi-Tuticorin railway line had been completed and it would be commissioned for traffic after safety inspection, a senior Railway official said today.
After inspection of the electrification work by the Railway Safety Commissioner, trains with electric locomotives would be operated in the section, Divisional Railway Manager A K Rastogi said here.
Rastogi, who was here for the inauguration of an extended platform, sponsored by the Sterlite Copper company, said running time of the trains would be reduced up to one hour with the operation of electric locomotives.
He also said Rs.150 crores had been sanctioned for a railway line from here to Melamarthur, primarilly for transporting coal to a power plant there.
A separate line from Tuticorin to Madurai via Aruppukottai would be laid in future, he added.
State Tourism Minsiter S P Shanmuganathan inaugurated the platform.
