Two girls drowned while taking a dip in the Ramganga river on the occasion of Sharad Poornima Wednesday, police said.
Chhaya, 14, and Priti, 18, were swept away when they had gone to the river as it flowed through Girdhapur village with two of their friends, an official said.
Their friends Chainvati and Chhatravati rushed to their rescue but couldn't save them, said Superintendent of Police Satish Kumar.
"Some boys who were bathing rushed and pulled Chainvati and Chhatravati out of the fast flowing river," he said.
Fishermen later found the bodies of the deceased, he said.
