Two persons, including jeweller, arrested for smuggling gold

Two persons, including a jeweller, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in smuggling gold through the Indira Gandhi International Airport here, a statement by the customs department said.

Acting on an intelligence report, a man, who arrived here from Nairobi via Muscat, was intercepted by the department's officials yesterday.

"A detailed personal search of the passenger resulted in recovery of a piece of gold weighing 845 grams, which was concealed in the inner pocket of the jacket worn by him," the customs department said.

The value of the gold, which has been seized, was assessed to be Rs 22.93 lakh. The accused was arrested.
 

The passenger revealed that he had smuggled around 2.25 kg of gold on behalf of a jeweller. Based on his input, the jeweller has also been arrested, the customs department said.
