UP CM announces 1 lakh compensation for boat tragedy victims

The Uttar Pradesh government today announced Rs 1 lakh compensation each for the next of kin of those killed in the boat tragedy in Kanpur.

"Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has announced Rs 1 lakh assistance each for those killed in the boat tragedy in Kanpur. He has also expressed condolences to bereaved family members," a spokesman said here.

Nine persons drowned when a boat carrying 12 people, including the boatman, capsized in the river at Siddhnath Ghat in Jajmau during the immersion of a Ganesha idol yesterday.

The boatman, however, swam to safety. Search operations are on to locate two missing persons.
 

The deceased were identified as Rajesh (40), Yash (13), Santosh (48), Ajay (22), Gudu (38), Harsh (12), Sanjay (35), Vinti (12) and Tanay (13), police said.
