"We had decided to continue the strike till the ongoing session of the Parliament, and today the bill faced obstacles in the Lok Sabha where it was taken up for consideration," said Shailendra Dubey, president of Sarvjan Hitai Sanrakshan samiti, which was spearheading the agitation.

The samiti will soon chalk out its future course of action, he said.

Over 18 lakh employees were on strike for the past week, crippling work in government offices, except emergency services, against the bill.

The employees had been critical of Congress and BSP for supporting the bill and have also announced that they will demand the resignation of the MPs who have supported the bill in the Rajya Sabha.

The bill was passed in Rajya Sabha on December 17, however, today, BJP and Samajwadi Party blocked it in the Lok Sabha.
