Violence claims one life in Nadia district

Press Trust of India Krishnagar (WB)

Official sources are yet to confirm whether the police opened fire on a crowd which set up a road blockade at PWD More on Krishnagar-Karimpur highway at Tehatta in protest against the refusal of police permission to allow a Jagaddhari puja at their chosen venue.

Agitators set fire to police vehicles and threw brickbats at policemen who arrived on the spot to break the blockade.

A high-level meeting was held at the state secretariat where the chief secretary, home secretary, IGP (law and order) and top police officers reviewed the situation at Tehatta.

No official version of the incident was, however, given by the government.

The Congress and the CPI(M) claimed that the police opened fire on a peaceful crowd in which one person was killed.

WBPCC chief Pradip Bhattacharya urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to "discipline" her police. "The chief minister will definitely deny police firing, but she should admit the fact," he said.

CPI(M) leader Mohd Salim alleged that the police opened fire on a peaceful crowd without issuing any prior warning.
