Watchman to be recommended for bravery award

: Police today said they would recommend the state government's bravery award to the watchman of a private departmental store for nabbing a would be ATM robber after a hot chase two days back.

Superintendent of Police Asra Garg felicitated the watchman at a function here and presented him a cash award and a book and said they would recommend Periyanayagam's name for the award.

The 35-year-old watchman at the store in front of the Collectorate went to attend nature's call that night when he noticed a man entering Indian Bank's ATM. Growing suspicious of his movements, he followed him inside, found him trying to break it open and challenged him. However the man pushed him down and escaped.
 

Undettered, he gave chase, caught him and handed him over to police.

During questioning the 28-year-old man reportedly confessed to having tried to break open another ATM of Union Bank of India on Dharmapuri-Tiruppattur road on Dec 31, 2013. That attempt was recorded on CCTV.

The man was produced before the Judicial Magistrate Court today and remanded to 15 days judicial custody today.
