A 25-year-old youth was today shot dead by three bike-borne armed assailants in broad daylight here in a suspected case of gang war, police said.

Vijay Panth and his friend Jatin were going to Ghaziabad court in connection with a vehicle theft case this morning when the assailants opened fire on them on Meerut crossing near Sai Upwan and fled from the spot.

Vijay, a resident of Burari in Delhi, was rushed to nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. He had received injuries in his stomach and hands.

Jatin managed to escape with minor injuries, they said.

Several cases of vehicle theft have been registered against Vijay and Jatin, they said.

Police suspect the murder might have been committed due to gang war between two groups.

"We are scanning footage of CCTVs installed in nearby areas to identify accused. A murder case has been registered against the trio. Police have formed investigation teams to crack this case and all accused would be arrested soon," a senior police officer said.

"Vijay and Jatin are auto lifters. The duo was going to Ghaziabad court in connection with one of cases. Vijay was riding the bike. When the duo reached Sai Upwan, three unidentified persons on a bike stopped them and started opening fire on them from close range.

"After the incident, accused fled from the spot. Vijay was declared brought dead when he was rushed to nearby hospital," the officer said.
