April Tax Collections Rise 18% At Rs 8,999cr

Total collection of taxes in April this year amounted to Rs 8,999 crore as compared to Rs 7,609 crore in the same period in 1999 _ showing a growth of 18 per cent.

Total collection of direct taxes during April 2000 is Rs 1,644 crore, as against Rs 1,169 crore during the corresponding month of last year, showing a growth of 41 per cent. The collection of income tax during the same period was Rs 2,351 crore as compared to Rs 1,684 crore in April 1999 _ showing an increase of 40 per cent.

Corporation tax collections, on account of refunds, showed an outgo of Rs 736 crore. In the same period last year, the outgo worked out to Rs 340 crore. The total collection of indirect taxes during this period was Rs 7,356 crore as compared to Rs 6,439 crore last year, reflecting an increase of 14 per cent. The collection of excise increased by 11 per cent to Rs 3,781 crore when compared to Rs 3,397 crore in April 1999.
