Avery India Workers Go On Strike

Amar Ganguly, general secretary of All-India Avery Employees' Association, said the employees were demanding a raise of Rs 1,250 per worker, but the management had settled at Rs 600.
Ganguly said We called for a vote through a secret ballot on September 5, 1996, where 96 per cent of the employees expressed their support for an indefinite strike.
Work has been suspended at the company's 84 branches and depots, including the two factories situated in Calcutta and Faridabad.
Senior executives at the Calcutta office, when contacted, refused to comment.
Ganguly and other union representatives met the state government to intervene on behalf of both the management and the employees.
A meeting has been called on September 28, which will be attended by representatives of the association and the management. It will presided over by West Bengal labour minister Shanti Ranjan Ghatak.
