Beating The Heat With Adventure Tourism

Alpana Sharma BSCAL

WEB REVIEW

If the world were a perfect place to live in, summers would not be so uncomfortable and if that could not be changed, then everybody would have headed for cooler climes the moment the mercury hit 38 degrees celsius. However, since nobody seems to be complying with the rules for perfection, the next best alternative is to hit the Net and gaze at pictures and read accounts of trips to the Himalayas on www.indiatravelog.com. The contents of the site are neatly divided into various sections, like trekking, scuba-diving, impressions, environment and fact file.

For those who like to walk for miles on end over mountains, the site provides information on trekking routes in the Garhwal and Kumaon regions of north India. The information, however, is not exhaustive. It would have been better if the site could have given an approximate idea of how much it costs to book rooms, how to go about booking these rooms et al.

Although it makes for good reading, the site could provide more detailed information on where activities like river rafting and paragliding are conducted, what is the best time, how much it costs etc. However, if you are among those who are caught in the all too familiar city environment of smog, pollution and computers, you are better off reading about other people's exotic holidays rather than sitting pretty with all the information but without having any place to go.

Indian fashion scene

There is place for everyone and everything on the Infobahn, including fashion. And since local content on the Net still seems to be way down there, it is nice to come across a site that is so totally India-centric. The website, www.fashionindia.net, provides information on designers, models and other professionals like photographers and make-up artists who play a crucial role in the glamour world. It also gives a list of fashion schools in India.

The site offers aspiring models the facility of submitting their resumes online.

The site also provides a list of boutiques and stores, however, the problem is that the content developers seem to have focused almost entirely on Mumbai. It is an attractive site and worth a dekko if you are looking for tips on make-up, hair styling, the sarees that are unique to different parts of India and such like stuff.

More on pets

There are people who love their pets and then are those who are obsessed with them. For those who take love for their pets too far, there is www.petsonline.com. Proud owners of pets can now enter photographs of their pets for the Cutest Pet of the Month contest organised by the site. And if you do not have a pet but like animals, you can browse through the site's archive of past winners of the cutest pet title. Somehow the last cute pet spotted by the site seems to have been way back in September 1997.

Grieving pet owners can draw solace from the section on Memorial. The site tries to provide succour by narrating stories of the rainbow across the bridge this side of heaven that has food enough and meadows green enough to house the dear departed.
