S Ravindran BSCAL

Mumbai-based power major, BSES will bid for four of the seven medium sized projects for which tenders were floated by the Maharashtra State Electricity Board(MSEB) in February this year.

The project sites are located at Waluj near Aurangabad, Sinnar in Nashik district, Mahad in Raigad district and Ranjangaon in Pune district. BSES conducted a technical feasibility before deciding to bid for them.

"These are also the best bets in terms of water availability," a BSES source said. The Sinnar, Mahad and Waluj power projects will be between 150 mw and 180 mw, while the Ranjangaon project will range between 100 mw to 150 mw. MSEB has also invited bids for three other power projects in the state ranging between 100 to 150 mw. These are at Kagal in Kolhapur district , Wai near Satara and Chincholi near Solapur.

All seven projects will be located in Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation area. Bidders are free to choose any fuel except coal and high speed diesel. The duration of the power purchase agreement (PPA) will be for 15 years. The projects have to be commissioned between 21 to 27 months of the signing of the PPA.

The tenders are said to have elicited a good response with over 100 companies purchasing more than 250 documents. This includes international energy major Enron, Bechtel, ABB, Siemens, Euro Capital, Bayer Works and Itochu. Leading domestic power company Tata Electric Hydro Power Supply company is also in the race.

The other buyers of the bid documents include L&T and Usha Martin. Reports suggest that the Ranjangaon, Mahad and Chincholi projects have elicited the maximum response.
