Speaking at a NAM ministerial meeting in New York on Wednesday, he said the movement's position on the issue was established at its 11th summit in Cartagena, Colombia, in October last year.

The summit had urged the UN-sponsored Conference on Disarmament to establish an ad-hoc committee to commence negotiations in early 1996 on a phased programme of nuclear disarmament and for the eventual elimination of nuclear weapons in a time-bound manner. However, India found itself isolated in the UN General Assembly in opposing the draft CTBT which did not contain the demand of the NAM summit.-- UNI

Gujral said NAM's goal should be to achieve increased presence in an expanded Security Council.

 

He said India's candidature for non-permanent membership of the Council must be seen in the background of growing marginalisation of NAM countries.

Gujral warned against possible attempts to divide the movement.
