Cars Cheaper In Haryana Despite Same St

Swati Prasad BSCAL

It still makes sense buying a Maruti car from Gurgaon, or anywhere else in Haryana. A Matiz would still cost lesser in Noida or anywhere else in Uttar Pradesh, the ruling on uniform sales tax on passenger cars for all states notwithstanding.

Most states where a particular car is manufactured offer exemptions on the central sales tax, which is levied at 5 per cent in all other states. This exemption is given primarily to encourage further investments in the state by that particular automobile manufacturer. Moreover, since the freight charges are also negligible, compared with other states, the ex-showroom price of such cars in their home states is considerably lower. So, in the case of Maruti 800, showing a Haryana address while buying a car could save you Rs 7,000 to Rs 8,000, informed a Maruti dealer.

Similarly, a Matiz would cost around Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 cheaper if you manage to procure UP address. Also, Telco Indica would cost lesser in Maharashtra and Hyundai Santro would be cheaper in Tamil Nadu.

However, passenger cars would cost more in Punjab and Chandigarh, against most other states, since a surcharge of 1.2 per cent is levied over the sales tax of 12 per cent.

Most manufacturers yesterday announced their revised prices, after the increase in sales tax from 6 per cent to 12 per cent here. Prices of all cars have gone up by a minimum of Rs 13,000 in the case of Maruti 800), up to Rs 40,000 (as n the case of Maruti Baleno.

The basic version of Telco Indica now costs Rs 3,36,587 (ex-showroom, in Delhi), against Rs 3,18,556.

The deluxe version of Indica diesel is now Rs 23,000 more expensive, at Rs 4,25,600. Daewoo Matiz SS now costs Rs 2.92 lakh, up from Rs 2.76 lakh till two days back. The basic version of Hyundai Santro now costs Rs 3,33,337, up from Rs 3,15,500.

The increase in sales tax on passenger cars is expected to lower the demand for cars, especially in the northern belt. All the northern states make up for more than 40 per cent of the sale of passenger cars in the country.
