Cattle Manur Power Project In Ludhiana Soon

Gagandeep Kaur LUDHIANA

The implementation of the country's first Rs 12.47 crore, project for power generation from cattle manure at Haibowal Dairy Complex in Ludhiana is likely to begin in the next three months. The one-megawatt power project has been planned to utilise 25 per cent of the total cattle dung from the complex and will be commissioned within the next two years. The project will not only help compensate the power shortfall in the state but also reduce the chances of blockage in city sewers due to cattle dung disposal. If the demonstration project is successful the capacity of the project is likely to be increased to eight megawatt. The fully automated plant will also produce around 50 tonne of organic fertiliser every day. In this regard, the ministry of natural energy sources has already selected Enteca's biogas induced mixing arrangement (BIMS) digester for setting up of the project after international bidding. The project report prepared by Enkem Engineers pvt Ltd says that the diary complex is spread over an area of 50 acres and has more than 1,490 dairies with 1.5 lakh animals which generate around 2,475 tonne of dung daily. During the preliminary survey, the company found that about 235 tonne of waste would have to be handled to produce 0.965 mw of electrical energy. According to estimates the biogas would have a composition of 60 to 65 per cent methane and 35 to 40 per cent carbon di oxide. There is also a plan to construct a gas holder of 1,000 cubic metres capacity, sufficient to hold about three hours of gas shortage. The plant would have require an area of around 16,000 cubic metres. However, the immediate requirement will be a mechanical drying yard of 1,000 cubic metres and an open drying yard of 1,000 cubic metres. After meeting the inhouse power requirement the surplus energy would be fed to the state grid at a power tariff of Rs 3.01 per kilowatt hour with a five per cent escalation in the tariff every year, said the report.
