Courting Success

Gargi Chakrabarty BSCAL

Liberalisation, for sure, is not for the faint-hearted. Even as it punishes sloth and inefficiency, it throws up enough opportunities for those willing to change and assume risks.

Diljeet Titus is one of the few who is not complaining. He is among the young generation of corporate lawyers who sighted a major opportunity thrown up by the advent of the MNC brigade, and has mastered the legal maze to the satisfaction of his clients.

The 32-year-old lawyer already has his own law firm, with an established practice that boasts of 18 Fortune 500 companies as clients!

Titus had his baptism by fire at the Singhanias, a well-known legal firm. The high point of his career was the articulation of General Motors deal with C K Birlas Hindustan Motors. Titus stayed over at Detroit for nearly a month to work out the legalities involved.

But the legal eagle was hungry for more. And six months ago, he floated his own firm, Titus and Co. There were opportunities to be grabbed, he says, modestly. I realised that Singhanias forte could be my very own.

To be sure, Titus and his team of 20 professionals have expanded the business at an incredible pace, and already have a client list of over 100 companies.

The range of clients is wide, covering areas like power, telecom, insurance and automobiles. Titus specialises in setting up joint ventures for his clients, having mediated in several cases, including the IHS India Ltd case which recently shot into the limelight.

But dont be misled into conjuring up visions of Titus spending all his time brooding over voluminous legal briefs. By his own admission, he is more crazy about cars than anything else. I love to just break away from the rigours of my profession by going on long, solitary drives, he says.

Titus is also a self-confessed fitness freak. I believe that the mind is healthy if only the body remains so, says he. And to back his words by action, he has spent a considerable sum of money in setting up a state-of-the-art home gym.

Clearly, Titus works hard, but he plays hard too.
