Digital Plans To Spread Globally Via Link-Ups

Sanjay K Pillai BSCAL

Digital (India) Ltd has appointed a new channel partner in South Korea and will be opening an office in Tokyo in the next two months.

A part of Digital's drive to focus on the emerging Asia-Pacific markets, this move will be followed by opening of new offices in Germany and Australia.

The opening of the Tokyo office is considered significant as the company had recently won big contracts with two Japanese firms. Additionally, Digital is also evaluating the choice of opening a third office in Munich which would be the third in Europe after London and Geneva.

The Geneva office was opened on April 29 and is considered a strategic location as it would be responsible for the company's pan-European operations alongside the development of the high growth Swiss market.

Apart from opening the office in Tokyo, Digital has also tied-up with 2ii Technologies of South Korea as channel partner. This, according to Ashish Basu, head, marketing, would help Digital significantly in establishing its presence in the Korean markets. Five months back the company had forged a similar channel partnership with HTL of Japan.

The company is laying special emphasis on the Japanese market and has established an in-house training centre to teach the Japanese language and culture to employees who will be working there.

According to Basu, Digital is also evaluating Sydney as a possible location in Australia and will take a final decision on it by the end of this year.

While its parent Compaq is the single-largest customer for Digital India at the moment, the company is looking at increasing its revenue spread from non-Compaq customers.

Three years down the line the company hopes to have a revenue spread of 50:50, shared equally between Compaq and non-Compaq customers. Som Mittal, managing director of Digital India, said the company was also in advanced talks with Compaq to help in version migration from SAP 3.0 to 4.6. According to Mittal, Digital India was ideally suited to help in the implementation because it was in the process of implementing SAP 4.6 in its own organisation and the process would be completed by the end of July this year.

He said Digital was waiting for Compaq to decide on the model, the implementation process, and the streamlining of existing legacy systems in Compaq.
