Divine Backing For Currency Sought

There is a new role model for the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP): Uncle Sam. At least when it comes to the colour of money, the organisation considers the United States worth emulating.

The VHP has written to Prime Minister A B Vajpayee requesting that the legend `In God we trust' be inscribed on Indian currency notes in an "appropriate" language at a proper spot.

The proposal draws inspiration from the Greenback which has the legend inscribed on them. According to VHP, it sends a universal message of faith and man's trust in the Almighty.

"This would be a powerful medium and send a noble message to all who handle the notes, thus elevating their consciousness and character," says the letter signed by VHP president Vishnu Hari Dalmia and working president (external) Bhupendra Kumar Modi.

Ways of worship may be different but the mankind's faith in the power of the Almighty has been universal and absolute, points out VHP.

"In a monetised economy, everyone has to handle currency notes in large numbers. This may be used as a powerful medium for dissemination of views and ideas. However, and rightly so, while there could be a difference of opinion regarding their use for sectarian purposes, there could be no objection to their use for propagation of universal ideas like faith in God," says the VHP letter.

Modi, who is also the chairman and president of ModiCorp, told Business Standard that there were also plans to set up a Hindu bank.

He however pointed out that his idea of Hinduism included many other sects including that of the Buddhists and Sindhis.

Under Modi, the VHP is also trying to organise convention of all religions under the aegis of the United Nations to put a ban on versions.

"The UN was created to prevent countries from occupying the territories of other countries. It has been successful to a great extent. We are trying to organise a meeting of the minds of major religions through the UN to prevent conversions," said Modi.
