Intel Chief To Discuss Global Plans During Visit

BSCAL

Craig Barrett, president and CEO of Intel _ the world's largest microprocessor manufacturer _ will visit India on May 25 and 26 2000, to outline Intel's strategies for global e-business in a surge economy.

Barrett will discuss the Internet economy from a worldwide as well as regional perspective, and will highlight the importance of embracing e-business to the competitive worldwide markets.

Barrett will address the key trade-offs on business needs to consider when implementing e-business, including customer value, operations excellence, rapid deployment and new business opportunities.

He will also address a group of select CEO's, CIOs and senior government officials on `India: Strategies for Global e-businesses' on May 25. His address will focus on what CEOs need to know about e-business, leadership challenges in the digital era, emerging changes and demands of the Internet economy, how this would affect the Indian industry and the strategies and infrastructure requirements for the new e-business paradigm to gain market leadership in the digital economy.

Barrett took over as the Intel president in 1997 and as its chief executive officer in 1998. He was the key to Intel's transformation from a small manufacturing operation into a global leader and is now planning to make Intel the pre-eminent building blocks supplier to the Internet economy.

His visit to India attains importance as the largest chip manufacturer had announced earlier this year that it would double its venture capital investments in the Indian infotech companies this year. It has also announced that it is eyeing more acquisitions in India.

Last year, Intel spent $6 billion globally on acquisitions, while $ 1 billion was spent on the venture capital funding route.

Among the companies Intel invested in the last year in India were Rediff, Network Solutions, Eastern Software, Ritechoice Bharati, Indus Software and Silicon Automation Systems.

Another important area for Intel in India is education. Intel's investments in educational initiatives in India are second only to the US. Among the various programmes Intel has launched in India include supplying building blocks to key computer manufacturers under its local OEM programme.
