Intel Outside

BSCAL

Barrett, one of the founding trio of the US $ 20 billion company, is credited with turning the company into a manufacturing powerhouse.

He was elevated from Chief operating officer to President in May this year and is the chosen successor to the legendary Andy Grove. The 23 year Intel veteran joined in 1974 after teaching material science in Stanford University for 10 years.

The 57-year-old Barrett was travelling with his wife and a large marketing entourage. India was the last leg of the Asia-Pacific tour. The capital hosted the Intel team for a day. In the evening, Barrett spoke to corporate invitees on his vision of the future of business computing which, in his opinion, will become increasingly visual and completely networked.

In the morning, Barrett kicked off project Vidya, which is Intels initiative in education, and he also inaugurated the home-computer fair. In his talk, he conveyed Intels market development plan for the home computer market, We hope to educate several thousand children, their parents and teachers, with multi-media facilities in cyberskools and fairs throughout India.

After the ceremonies, the Barretts did the visiting Duke and Duchess act. Craig networked with everyone including Intels many software and hardware partners who had exhibits. He put on a dancing act with the trademark MMX Bunnies while his wife egged him on. Put on the Al Gore act, Craig, she cried. There was also a spontaneous photo session with anyone who wanted a souvenir. All this earned a lot of brownie points with the scribes, one of whom was heard remarking: Thorough professionals both, and so genial too !.

Barretts wife, the tall and elegant Barbara, who is a pilot and was the chief of federal civil aviation board, did her bit for Barrett and Intel. Craig is a great guy. He sacrificed a lot for my career. I worked in Washington and he in Phoenix, and we commuted on weekends.

The First lady of Intel gushed: India is very special to Craig and me. Not a meaningless soundbite that , considering India gets a full paragraph along with China and Brazil in Intels 1996 annual report , and it is also expected to be a 2.5 million home PC market in 2 years time.
