Her marital roots can be traced back to Kutch in Gujarat. Her husband who is currently on the Econmics faculty at Maryland University in the United States, proposes to join her in Delhi next year. They met on the the campus at Syracuse University, when Shigeko was doing her Phd.
The doctorate concentrated on the labour markets in India with an accent on unemployment among engineers. "For five months I worked out of a Jorbagh flat
and travelled through North India visiting the various engineering colleges," elaborates Asher .
On this outing she is very keen to pick up more than a smattering of Hindi. "I want to learn the language and have already contacted a teacher. My husband learnt Japanese and can now converse fluently with my mother. Now it is my turn," she says.
