Ministry Dumps Export Intensive Area Scheme Dumped

The scheme has been closed as the Planning Commission did not find it viable in the form suggested by the commerce ministry and thus, it was not cleared.
In 1994, the commerce ministry evolved this scheme to develop infrastructure on a warfooting in 22 small non-cosmopolitan cities having export-potential. The scheme was expected to be funded mainly by the Centre. The scheme had envisaged a Rs 100 crore fund in the initial phase.
The scheme has also identified products and items to be exported from these towns, which have remained dormant in the country
