Old Favourites Shimmer

With old economy stocks continuing to outperform convergent sector stocks, the Calcutta Stock Exchange (CSE) index yesterday made significant gains.

The CSE 40-share closed at 1989.97 points, nearly 47 points higher than its previous close of 1943.06 points. Satyam Computer which has been suffering since the news of issue of shares at Rs 10 surfaced, came under further pressure.

The scrip opened 8 per cent down at Rs 2,012, went down further to Rs 1,924, but then recovered to close at Rs 2,092.10. Among other losers of the day were HCL Infosystems, Global Tele-Systems, DSQ Software and Rolta India.

HCL Infosystems lost 5.18 per cent to close at Rs 294.50 (previous close Rs 310.60), Global Tele-Systems lost 3.78 per cent to close at Rs 883 (previous Rs 917.70), DSQ was down from Rs 588 (its previous close) to Rs 567.50 and Rolta India lost Rs 7 to close at Rs 195.80.

 

Among the gainers were HDFC, which advanced Rs 37 to close at Rs 504, while Sterlite Industries and Himachal Futuristic Corporation (HFCL) gained Rs 35 and Rs 54, respectively. While Sterlite closed at Rs 576, HFCL closed at Rs 850.
