Pvt Road Projects Worth Rs 965cr In The Pipeline

They include the Udaipur bypass scheme in Rajasthan and Thane-Bhiwandi bypass scheme in Maharashtra, which together cost about Rs 42 crore. The agreements for implementation of these projects have already been signed.
Despite the resource crunch, 753 kms of the single lane section of national highways were converted into double lanes during the first four years of the eighth plan.
Similarly, according to surface transport minister TG Venkataraman, 230 kms of double lane sections of the highways have been made into four lanes and another 3,104 kms of two lanes were strengthened during the same period. Besides, six bypasses, 29 major bridges and 268 minor bridges also have been constructed during the first four years of the eighth plan.
As for the port sector, the minister conceded that though the privatisation programme has had some success in terms of leasing of the existing port facilities, no scheme for building new assets through the build, own and transfer route has so far fructified.
To achieve this, there is a plan to set up a two-berth terminal for Jawaharlal Nehru port. There are also proposals to set up a two multi-purpose berth at New Mangalore port and Kandla port. Kandla will also have a container handling equipment terminal. Similarly, Mormugao port will have two multi-purpose berths. Tenders in respect of these have already been floated.
