Sc Disposes Of Cauvery Case

Curtains came down on the six-year-old Cauvery dispute in the Supreme Court yesterday when a Constitution bench disposed of the suit filed by Tamil Nadu in view of the accord between the four riparian states.
Tamil Nadu had filed the suit in 1992 for the implementation of the Cauvery tribunal order that Karnataka release 205 tmc of water for it annually.
The Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice M M Punchhi disposed of the suit after Tamil Nadu's counsel K Parasaran said he had no objection if the suit was closed in view of the scheme notified by Centre on August 11.

In the scheme, the Centre had created an authority, headed by the Prime Minister with the riparian states as its members, under the Inter-State River Disputes Act for implementation of the interim award of June 25, 1991 and any other order passed by the tribunal.
Karnataka, the main opponent to Tamil Nadu in the river water sharing, proposed the closure of the case. Kerala and Pondicherry did not oppose it either. Attorney General Soli Sorabjee urged the bench presided over by Chief Justice M Punchhi to dispose of the case as the purpose was served.
