Sc Pulls Up Govt On Ed Chief Transfer

BSCAL

The Supreme Court yesterday expressed displeasure over the transfer of enforcement director M K Bezboruah, who was investigating sensitive economic offences, as transport commissioner of the Delhi government.

While the government gave an undertaking that Bezboruah would not be taken off these cases, the court directed that his posting shall be subject to its orders.

Hearing a public interest petition filed by Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy on the multi-crore Indian Bank scam, the judges observed that the recent turn of events was "very disturbing". They said even if Bezboruah's transfer took effect on or before September 8, the next date of hearing, "it shall be subject to further orders of this court".

They also asked the government to file an affidavit stating the factual position before August 26.

The court recorded solicitor-general Santosh Hegde's statement that "no cases which were/ are investigated, supervised by Bezboruah shall be closed/conceded until the next hearing".

The BJP yesterday refused to comment on the Supreme Court's order. "Whatever the Supreme Court says, everyone in the country should comply," party leader Pramod Mahajan said.
