Scandinavian Airlines Hauled Up By Mrtpc Over Offensive Ads

BSCAL

In the application, the directorate general has stated that In order to promote its services among the customers, the airlines has released a series of advertisements in the Hindustan Times. The complaint said, It would be seen from the advertisements that it had shown the travellers as owls and monsters.

The advertisements state that rushing to the airport in the middle of the night is hardly appealing to most earthly creatures as travelling in the night ruins a good night's sleep. The airlines company has pleaded that travelling during the day saves one day which is generally lost in making up the lost sleep.

The directorate general, in his application has stated that, The representations made in the advertisements imply that those passengers who travel by night flights on other airlines are just like owls and monsters as they sleep atnight.

It not only belittles the travellers going by night flights but also disparages the midnight services of other airlines. It is against the interest of the travellers. It has adopted an unfair method to attract the customers without any reference to the quality of its services.

The trade practice seen from the advertisements released by the respondent constitutes unfair trade practices falling under clauses (2), (4), (6) and (10) of section 36A of the MRTP Act.

Monopolistic and Restrictive Trade Practices Act.

The application further requests the commission to set up an enquiry into the matter besides restraining the airlines company from releasing such false or misleading advertisements which are against the interests of the customers and public in general.
