Sri Lanka'S Galle Harbour To Get A Facelift

A British-Chinese consortium, led by Mott Macdonald of Britain, has proposed a $350 million plan to develop Sri Lanka's ancient Galle harbour into a modern trans-shipment port, officials said.

The new port will have five berths with a capacity of a million containers a year, Suppiah Kandasamy, chairman of the consortium, said after handing over the project feasibility study to the ports and shipping minister of Sri Lanka, Mohamed Ashraff. Mother ships from the west coming past Aden can stop at Galle where trans-shipment will take place instead of going on to Singapore, he said. The consortium, apart from Mott Macdonald, consists of three Chinese firms
