Us Congressmen Hail Indias Foreign Policy

BSCAL

Several United States congressmen have lauded the role being played by India in the South Asian region and stressed the need for improving Indo-US relations further. Highlighting efforts taken by India to maintain good

neighbourly relations, the United States lawmakers hailed the agreements reached by New Delhi with Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Participating at a function organised by the Indian American Friendship Council here to honour Democratic senator Tim Johnson with Special Friend of India Award, the members also said the United States should play only a constructive role in resolving pending disputes in the region.

Johnson, a former pro-Pakistani senator but now supporting India, told the council meeting organised to mark the 50th anniversary of Indian independence, that no solution on Kashmir can be imposed by the United States.

The US can play a constructive and positive role, but a resolution of all these issues will ultimately have to be brought about by the people of South Asia themselves.

Stating that India as the worlds largest democracy, is the democratic power in Asia, Republican Congressman Ed Royce said the US and New Delhi should work closely to create a better world. Democratic Congressman Brad Sherman said the success of people of Indian origin in the United States was without parallel.

Several members of Congress, including Frank Pallone, co-founder of the India Caucus, accepted invitations to a banquet organised by the council.
