Vw Awaits Court Ruling In Gm Row

BSCAL

The German court decided to postpone a decision on the attempted gagging order until October 30. The dispute stems from VWs recruitment in 1993 of Jose Ignacio Lopez, GMs head of worldwide purchasing.

In a complex set of legal actions, GM claimed Lopez and several other GM employees who moved with him took confidential material relating to components purchasing and new car plants. VW has denied the charges, which have been investigated separately by German police.

The inquiries have proceeded slowly. David Herman, Opel chairman, forecast this month that investigating magistrates in Darmstadt might soon reach a decision on whether there was a case against Lopez.

However, Gernot Broschat, a spokesman for the magistrates office, last week said it was uncertain whether the inquiries would be completed by the end of the year.
