NIIT plans to open 85 new GNIIT centres starting June. Of these, 60 centres would be located in India, with the remaining 25 centres spread across China, Thailand, Malaysia, Nigeria and Bangladesh.

"The company will invest around Rs 20 crore in setting up these institutes," G Raghavan, president, NIIT, said.

In addition, Sun Microsystems India and NIIT have also signed an agreement through which NIIT will have access to the latest Sun technologies, tools, technical resource and curricula on the Java and Solaris platforms.

Raghavan added that the new centres will also take advantage of its tie up with Sun Microsystems. "The shortage of skilled IT professionals is one of the most pressing issue in the IT industry.

The demand for IT professionals with requisite skills, far exceed the current and projected supply. Institutes hence need to help their students acquire skills on latest technologies," said Karie Willyerd, vice-president and chief learning officer of Sun Microsystems, said.
