Outsourcing fuels 3D designing software mkt

From toothbrush to car, from computer monitor to the chair in office, the design of the product catches our eye first.

Computer aided design (CAD) touches everything that designing has to do. SolidWorks Corporation, a France-based 3D design software company sees an emerging market for 3D design software in India.

"There is a definitive shift towards the use of 3D mechanical design software due to its cost effectiveness, ease-of-use and powerful modelling capabilities," said John McEleney, CEO, SolidWorks Corporation.

CAD 3D designing tremendously reduces the 'time-to-market' and reduces the production cycle by almost 50 per cent.

Another key factor for the increasing scope of electronic 3D design in India is the country's becoming a host for knowledge process and design outsourcing. This has been vindicated by a Nasscom study which says the field of outsourcing in engineering design services to be between $7 billion and $12 billion.

"India with its high engineering base can emerge as the destination for high value manufacturing design," added John McEleney.

"The company wants to take advantage of the shift from 2D designing to 3D and since we focus on developing 3D mechanical design software, we aim to grow here," said Ved Narayan, vice-president, Asia Pacific, SolidWorks.

The company has a market share of 8-9 per cent in the Indian CAD market. The Indian CAD market is considered to be worth $25 million of which the 3D market is $9-10 million.
