| Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has sought government permission to set up an enforcement wing to look into discipline and vigilance, sources said today. Trai's move is prompted by a spate of complaints against telecom operators violating licence conditions and other acts of omission and commission. The government is yet to respond to the regulator's request, which was sent a few weeks ago, sources added. Trai, which has a staff strength of just over 100, at present relies on the vigilance mechanism of the department of telecommunication (DoT). It had referred complaints against Reliance Infocomm for alleged re-routing of international calls as local ones to DoT. A Trai official said a vigilance and enforcement wing would necessitate opening offices at least in all the four metros and big cities. |
