Trai seeks govt nod for enforcement wing

Press Trust of India New Delhi
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has sought government permission to set up an enforcement wing to look into discipline and vigilance, sources said today.

Trai's move is prompted by a spate of complaints against telecom operators violating licence conditions and other acts of omission and commission.

The government is yet to respond to the regulator's request, which was sent a few weeks ago, sources added.

Trai, which has a staff strength of just over 100, at present relies on the vigilance mechanism of the department of telecommunication (DoT).

It had referred complaints against Reliance Infocomm for alleged re-routing of international calls as local ones to DoT.

A Trai official said a vigilance and enforcement wing would necessitate opening offices at least in all the four metros and big cities.
