Gopichand P Hinduja, chairman of the multinational Hinduja Group, passed away in London at the age of 85, according to a PTI report on Tuesday, citing sources.
Hinduja had been unwell for several weeks and died in a London hospital, the report added.
Popularly known as ‘GP’ in business circles, he was part of the second generation of the Hinduja family and took over as chairman in May 2023, following the death of his elder brother, Srichand Hinduja.
He is survived by his wife, Sunita, his sons, Sanjay and Dheeraj, and his daughter, Rita.
Gopichand was a graduate from the Jai Hind College in Mumbai and had also received honorary doctorates in law from the University of Westminster and in economics from Richmond College, London.

He joined the Hinduja Group in Mumbai in 1959 and was instrumental in transforming it from a family-run trading business into a global conglomerate with interests in finance, energy, automotive, media, and infrastructure. During his leadership, the group expanded its global footprint through key acquisitions such as Gulf Oil in 1984 and Ashok Leyland in 1987.
Earlier this year, Gopichand Hinduja and his family were named the richest in the United Kingdom, with an estimated net worth of ₹33,67,948 crore, according to the Sunday Times Rich List 2025.
