US inflation likely rose last month as Trump tariffs drive up prices

US inflation likely ticked higher last month as the Trump administration's import taxes have lifted the price of goods, potentially putting the Federal Reserve in a tough spot when it meets next week. Economists forecast that consumer prices rose 2.9 per cent in August from a year earlier, according to a survey of economists by data provider FactSet. That would be an increase from an annual pace of 2.7 per cent in July. Excluding volatile food and energy costs, core inflation is expected to have increased 3.1 per cent, the same as in July. Both figures are above the Fed's 2 per cent inflation target. The potential increase, while modest, would underscore the challenges the Fed is facing as it experiences relentless pressure from President Donald Trump to reduce its short-term interest rate. Trump hopes that rate cuts will spur more borrowing and spending and boost the economy. Recent government reports have also shown that hiring has slowed sharply in recent months and was lower tha

Some National Guard to stay in DC till Nov as Trump's order set to expire

Some National Guard troops from outside the District of Columbia will remain in the nation's capital at least through the end of November at the request of the Trump administration. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said in a statement that he had approved a request from the Secretary of the Army for 150 military police to carry out patrols in Washington through November 30. It comes as Trump's emergency order over the nation's capital, which federalised its police force and launched a surge of law enforcement into the city, is set to expire overnight Wednesday after Congress failed to extend it.

Trump gives ambiguous response to Russian drone incursion into Poland

President Donald Trump on Wednesday offered an ambiguous initial response to Russia's drone incursion into Poland's airspace, a provocative act by Moscow that has put the United States' NATO allies in Europe on edge. What's with Russia violating Poland's airspace with drones? Here we go! Trump posted on his Truth Social platform late Wednesday morning, nearly a half-day after Poland announced that several Russian drones entered its territory over the course of many hours and were shot down with help from NATO allies. White House officials did not immediately respond to queries about Trump's cryptic comments about the incursion. It was the first time the transatlantic alliance has confronted a potential threat in its airspace, scrambling jets to shoot the Russian drones out of the sky. But Trump's comment stood in sharp contrast to the strong condemnation by several European leaders and was notably less robust than that of his ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker. Cong takes dig at PM Modi, reminds of Trump's ceasefire claims '35 times'

The Congress on Wednesday took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks describing India and the US as "natural partners", asking whether they are so natural that President Donald Trump has declared on "over 35 different occasions" that he brought about the India-Pakistan "ceasefire" using trade as the instrument of leverage. The opposition party's dig came after Prime Minister Modi reacted warmly to US President Trump's positive assessment of trade talks between the two countries, expressing confidence that the ongoing negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the partnership between them. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, "Prime Minister Modi has told President Trump that India and the US are 'natural partners.' The question is now this: Are they so natural that President Trump has declared on over 35 different occasions that he brought about the India-Pakistan ceasefire on the evening of May 10th
