UK fires ambassador to US Peter Mandelson over his links to Jeffrey Epstein

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday fired the country's ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, over his links to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In a statement in the House of Commons on Thursday, Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty said the decision came in the wake of the publication this week of emails Mandelson sent to Epstein in the 2000s, in which he gave his support to the disgraced financier even when he was facing jail for sex offences. Doughty said the emails showed that the depth and extent of Mandelson's relationship with Epstein was materially different from what was known when he was appointed ambassador to Washington last year in the wake of the Labour Party's election victory. Mandelson, who took up his post in February this year after what the government described as an extensive vetting process, has voiced his deep regret over his previous links with Epstein and said he knew nothing about his criminal activities. Leaving top Trump admin post? President may have ambassadorship for you

Diplomacy may be soft power, but in President Donald Trump's administration, it is also lately a soft landing. National security adviser Mike Waltz was nominated as United Nations ambassador after he mistakenly added a journalist to a Signal chat discussing military plans. Trump tapped IRS Commissioner Billy Long to be his ambassador to Iceland after Long contradicted the administration's messaging in his less than two months in the job. And Trump last weekend named State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce as deputy representative to the UN after she struggled to gel with Secretary of State Marco Rubio's close-knit team. The new appointments can be viewed as consolation prizes for leaving a high-profile post in the Trump administration following rocky tenures. But they also reflect the degree to which Trump is trying to keep his loyalists close, even if their earlier placements in the administration were ill-fitting. Breaking with the reality TV show that helped make Trump a ...

Germany wants better ties with India on defence, skilled labour: Ambassador

Germany's incoming government has outlined plans to deepen its partnership with India, particularly in the areas of defence and skilled labour migration, German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann has said. Ackermann highlighted that the coalition treaty agreed upon by the two parties forming the next German government explicitly references India multiple times. "The most significant point is that this government wants to enhance cooperation with India and strengthen bilateral ties," Ackermann told PTI on Friday, adding that the incoming government specifically highlights defence and skilled labour migration as key areas of focus. The new German government is yet to be officially sworn in, pending the election of a chancellor and the appointment of ministers in parliament over the coming two weeks. However, Ackermann expressed optimism about the trajectory of Indo-German relations under the new administration. "We can expect the new German government to be very active and very

German Ambassador Philipp Ackermann said his country will have a new government soon, but there will be a "huge continuity" when it comes to the political relationship with India and Berlin will continue its focus on New Delhi. Interacting with PTI on the sidelines of an event here Wednesday night, he also said, "We are looking forward to intensifying our relationship in the years of come." Germany trying to stem illegal migration, protect liberal stance: Ackermann

Germany is trying to reduce the illegal migration while protecting its very liberal immigration policy at the same time, German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann has said. He made the remarks during an interview with former Indian Diplomat Vijay Gokhale at Pune Public Policy Festival, on the topic - 'Trump's world: How the rest will deal with political change in the United States.' Responding to a question related to Germany being bearing the brunt of immigration, Ackermann said the core of the country's internal politics is migrational. "You have to imagine that 30 per cent of the German population has one non-German parent and 20 per cent of the German population (German nationals) have two non-German parents. "Basically, our country has turned in the last 20 -25 years to a complete immigration country, therefore saying that closing the door is absurd because we have lived from migration and from migration," he said. He claimed that Germany has the most liberal immigration l
