Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday disbursed over Rs 262 crore under 'Matsyakarula Sevalo' (in the service of fishermen) scheme for the benefit of over 1.3 lakh fishermen families across the state during the annual fishing ban period. Fishing in the sea is banned between April 15 and June 15 every year to facilitate breeding, Naidu said, addressing a public meeting at Tummalapenta village in Nellore district. "The chief minister extended a financial aid of Rs 261.5 crore to 1.3 lakh fishermen families during the fishing ban period," a press release said. The state offers financial aid of Rs 20,000 to each eligible fisherman's family. "The government is committed to ensuring that fishermen's families do not face hardship during the annual fishing ban period, and financial assistance is being provided directly to beneficiaries," Naidu said. Digital Bharat Nidhi has signed a pact with the Andhra Pradesh government to roll out amended BharatNet programme in the state with financial support of Rs 2,432 crore from the Centre, an official statement said on Wednesday. The agreement was signed between Digital Bharat Nidhi (DBN), the Andhra Pradesh government, Andhra Pradesh BharatNet Infrastructure Limited (APBIL), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Andhra Pradesh State FiberNet Limited (APSFL) for implementation of the Amended BharatNet Programme to accelerate broadband connectivity across the rural part of the state. At least four people were killed and 18 others were injured in a powerful explosion here in Sri Sathyasai district of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, a police official said. Though the explosion, which demolished at least two houses, was being attributed to a gas cylinder blast, it may not be limited to a gas cylinder, given the intensity of the blast, the official said. "Until now, four people died, and 18 others were injured, including one in a serious condition," the official told PTI. Earlier, Sri Sathyasai district superintendent of police S Satish said the explosion occurred around 12.30 pm. He said workers from Telangana were living in that house where the explosion occurred.

Andhra Pradesh Transport Minister M Ramprasad Reddy on Saturday said over 1,000 buses have been checked across the state and 236 penalised for lacking proper documents. Reddy's remarks come in the wake of four ghastly bus accidents claiming 45 lives, of these 33 charred to death, and injuring several others within six months. "We are taking intense action to avoid road accidents. Across the state, we checked 1,036 buses. Cases have been registered, and penalties were slapped against 236 buses without proper documents," he said in an official press release. According to the minister, authorities have undertaken checks at 16 points, including toll plazas and check-posts, across the state. The transport minister promised regular checking drives and stringent action against violations. Reddy asserted that the government gives 'primacy to passenger safety' and called on everybody to adhere to the law.
