Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Tuesday disbursed financial assistance of Rs 78 crore under 'YSR Kalyanamasthu' and 'YSR Shaadi Tohfa' schemes to meet the marriage expenses of those belonging to SC, ST, BC, minority and other communities. The Chief Minister said 10,132 couples who got married in the October-December quarter of 2023 will benefit from this scheme. YSR Kalyanamasthu and YSR Shaadi Tohfa schemes encourage children's education as the bride and bridegroom have to complete class 10 to avail them, said Reddy, addressing officials virtually from his camp office. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy on Friday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi here and sought special category status for the state, party sources said. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) also tweeted about the meeting between Jagan and Modi. Reddy, who swept the 2019 state polls riding on the issue of special category status, has held several meetings with the prime minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the issue in the past. The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea of the Andhra Pradesh government challenging the anticipatory bail granted to TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu in the Amaravati Inner Ring Road scam case. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khana and Dipankar Datta dismissed the plea of the state government in which it has challenged the high court order of January 10 giving relief to Naidu. The bench noted that an appeal in the case arising from the same FIR involving other accused, was already dismissed by the court last year. It said in view of the earlier order passed by this court, the bench is not inclined to entertain the appeal of the state government. The Andhra Pradesh government on Friday kicked off its comprehensive caste census to enumerate all communities in the state. Information and Public Relations (I & PR) Minister C Srinivasa Venugopala Krishna said the census is scheduled for 10 days from January 19. "The comprehensive caste census is scheduled for 10 days in one phase and if needed, it will be extended by four or five days," Krishna told PTI. The Minister noted that volunteers will visit each and every home to collect the caste details, which will be relayed to the village secretariat system. Andhra Pradesh becomes the second state after Bihar to take up the caste census. Krishna said officials in the village secretariat system across the state will verify the accuracy of information collected by the volunteers and correct it, if necessary, before making the final record. The Andhra Pradesh government will begin Backward Classes caste census around November 15, aimed at better serving the 139 communities which fall under this category, Minister C Srinivasa Venugopala Krishna said on Wednesday. The Backward Classes Welfare Minister noted the government will extensively deploy the village secretariat system for the caste census, along with the volunteer system. "From November 15, one week here and there, this caste census will begin. For the BC caste census, the village secretariat system will be used extensively, along with the volunteer system," said Krishna, addressing a press conference at the Secretariat.
