J&K elections: Omar, Karra, Raina among 239 candidates in fray for phase 2

A total of 239 candidates are in the fray from the 26 constituencies going to polls in the second phase of the three-phase Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections as 27 nominations were withdrawn on Monday. Monday was the last day of the withdrawal of nomination papers for the second phase covering assembly segments spread across central Kashmir districts of Budgam, Srinagar and Ganderbal, and Poonch and Rajouri districts in Jammu region. Prominent among those in the fray for these seats are National Conference leader Omar Abdullah who is contesting from two seats, Pradesh Congress Committee chief Tariq Hamid Karra, Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina and jailed separatist leader Sarjan Ahmad Wagay alias Barkati. According to a statement issued by the office of chief electoral officer, J&K, 27 candidates withdrew their candidature in the office of respective returning officers across six districts, leaving 239 candidates in the poll fray. Electoral rolls revision in Delhi to be carried out from next month

The formal exercise for holding the Delhi Assembly polls, due early next year, will begin with a special summary revision of the electoral rolls through a house-to-house verification campaign from next month in the city, officials said. The polls for the 70-member assembly in Delhi are due in February 2025, they said. As part of the special summary revision, a crucial house-to-house verification exercise is being conducted across the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi in which Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will be visiting the homes of the people to verify elector details and assist in filling up relevant forms, the office of Chief Electoral Officer, Delhi said. The Election Commission of India has ordered that the electoral roll of NCT of Delhi be updated with reference to January 1, 2025 as the qualifying date by conducting a special summary revision of the electoral rolls, it said. J'khand CM Soren meets Kharge, Rahul, assembly poll preparation discussed

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Tuesday met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi here and discussed the upcoming assembly polls. The meeting comes days after former Jharkhand chief minister Champai Soren joined the BJP after resigning from the JMM citing dissatisfaction with the party's current style of functioning and "bitter humiliation". Soren met Kharge and Gandhi at the Congress president's residence here. Congress general secretary organisation K C Venugopal and Soren's wife Kalpana Soren were also present during the meeting. Though Soren termed the meeting as a courtesy call, preparations for the assembly polls later this year were learnt to have been discussed. Champai Soren was appointed chief minister on February 2, following Hemant Soren's resignation and subsequent arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case. Athawale's party to contest 8-10 seats in Haryana if no agreement with BJP

Union minister Ramdas Athawale-led Republican Party of India (Athawale) plans to fight the Haryana assembly polls on 8-10 seats and support ally BJP on the remaining, party leaders said here on Monday. However, if an agreement is reached with the BJP, the RPA (A) will contest just two seats and leave the rest for the senior NDA partner, the party's Haryana unit president Ravi Sonu Kundli said here. "Discussions are ongoing with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding seat allocation. If no agreement is reached with the BJP, the Republican Party will field candidates on 8 to 10 seats and support BJP candidates on the remaining 80 seats," Kundli said.
