Newly constructed bridge collapses in Bihar's Araria, no casualties

A portion of a newly constructed bridge over the Bakra river collapsed in Pararia village of Bihar's Araria district on Tuesday, a police officer said. No casualty was reported, he said. The bridge, constructed by the state government, was not opened to the public as approach roads to the bridge were yet to be constructed. The bridge connects Kursa Kanta and Sikty areas of Araria district. Talking to PTI, Amit Ranjan, Superintendent of Police (SP), Araria, said, A portion of a newly constructed bridge over Bakra river has collapsed. Officials have reached there to examine the matter." The cause of the incident is not yet known, he added. In March, an under-construction bridge over the Kosi river collapsed in Supaul district, leaving one person dead and 10 others injured.

PM Modi to inaugurate Nalanda University campus in Bihar next week

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Bihar next week to inaugurate the campus of Nalanda University, named after the world-famous ancient seat of learning. Officials of the state government and the central university held a meeting here on Saturday to oversee the preparations for the PM's visit, on June 19. Dignitaries like Governor Rajendra Arlekar and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar are likely to attend the function where the Prime Minister is expected to spend an hour and a half. The PM is likely to reach the venue by helicopter from the nearest airport at Gaya. Situated less than 20 km from the Nalanda Mahavira, which has been declared a World Heritage site, the university was established in 2010, by an Act of the Parliament. Nitish appoints Cabinet members as ministers in-charge of various districts

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday appointed all his cabinet colleagues as 'ministers in-charge' of various districts. According to a government order, Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha have been made ministers-in-charge of Patna and Muzaffarpur districts respectively. Sinha will also be in-charge of Bhojpur district. Vijay Kumar Choudhary has been made in-charge of Purnea and Nalanda districts, Bijendra Prasad Yadav will be minister in-charge of Vaishali district. Chirag Paswan wins Hajipur Lok Sabha seat in Bihar by 170,000 votes

Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) president Chirag Paswan on Tuesday won the Hajipur Lok Sabha seat in Bihar, where he defeated the nearest RJD rival by over 1.70 lakh votes, the Election Commission said. Paswan polled 6.14 lakh votes, while his nearest rival Shiv Chandra Ram got 4.44 lakh votes. Paswan, an NDA partner, gave up Jamui, from where he was enjoying a second consecutive term, to contest from Hajipur, represented by his late father Ram Vilas Paswan eight times. In 2019, the seat was won by the late leader's younger brother Pashupati Kumar Paras, who had split the LJP in 2021, but resigned from the Union cabinet recently when the BJP announced that it would back his nephew.
