Nagpur factory blast: Death toll climbs to 5, govt announces compensation

The death toll in an explosion at an aluminum products factory in Nagpur district rose to five on Saturday after two workers succumbed to their burn injuries, police said. The Maharashtra government announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of the deceased while the company has agreed to pay them Rs 55 lakh each, a minister said. Another five workers are undergoing treatment at hospital, a police official said. The blast took place around 7 pm on Friday at MMP Aluminum Industries in Umred MIDC (industrial area). "Two critically injured workers admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur died early in the morning, while three workers were found dead inside the factory after the fire was extinguished," said inspector Dhanaji Jhalak of Umred police station. The deceased workers were residents of Nagpur district. Police nabs Gujarat firecracker godown's owner where blast-fire killed 21

Police on Tuesday arrested the owner of a godown near Deesa town in Gujarat's Banaskantha district, hours after a powerful blast and fire killed 21 persons there, officials said. Firecrackers were allegedly stored and manufactured illegally at the godown, they said. Deepak Mohnani, who owns the godown, was arrested by a team of Banaskantha police from neighbouring Sabarkantha district on Tuesday night, Inspector General of Border Range Chirag Koradia said. "We have arrested the main accused, Deepak Mohnani from a place in Sabarkantha," the Range IG told PTI. The warehouse - Deepak Traders - was owned by Deepak and his father Khubchand Mohnani, officials earlier said. The explosion, which occurred approximately at 9.45 am, flattened the godown in an industrial area near Deesa town, around 30 km from the Banaskantha district headquarters. 5 dead in suicide bomb attack at seminary in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

A top cleric and four worshippers were killed and 20 others injured in a blast triggered by a suicide bomber during Friday prayers at a seminary in northwest Pakistan's restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province ahead of the fasting month of Ramazan, police said. The blast claimed the life of Hamidul Haq Haqqani, chief of his own faction of the Jamiat Ulema Islam (JUI) and caretaker of the Madrassa-e-Haqqania, located in Akora Khattak town of Nowshera district, Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah confirmed. A ragpicker was injured in a blast that took place in central Kolkata on Saturday, a police officer said. The explosion occurred when he was "near a plastic bag" at the crossing of Blochmann Street and SN Banerjee Road.
