Part of under-construction bridge over Ganga collapses in UP's Bulandshahr

Three slabs of an under-construction bridge over the Ganga river in Gajraula village of this Uttar Pradesh district have collapsed, officials said on Saturday. However, no casualty was reported, a senior official said. Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav pulled up the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the incident, accusing it of playing with people's lives by compromising with the quality of projects. A committee led by the chief development officer (CDO) has been formed to investigate the matter, District Magistrate (DM) Chandra Prakash Singh said. According to the DM, the bridge is being built over the Ganga to connect Bulandshahr with Amroha. Three slabs that were laid on Friday night got damaged and collapsed, he said. No loss of life was reported in the incident, the DM said, adding that the work got over around 11 pm on Friday after which the weather turned bad and the slabs got damaged. The ship that crashed into a bridge in Baltimore was undergoing "routine engine maintenance" in the port beforehand, the Coast Guard said. 11 injured after wave breaks floating bridge handrail in Kerala, say police

Several persons were injured in an accident at Varkala beach here on Saturday when a huge wave hit a floating bridge that people were standing on, toppling many of them into the water, police said. An officer of the Varkala police station said 11 persons, including two children, were injured in the accident in which a handrail of the floating bridge was also broken due to the impact of the waves. Two of the injured persons were referred to the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College as their injuries were serious, police said. As the people standing on the floating bridge were wearing life jackets, they could be brought back to shore quickly and safely without any loss of life, it said. The incident occurred around 5 pm, police said.

Temporary bridge set up for Christmas festivities in Kerala collapses

A makeshift bridge, set up as part of Christmas celebrations at Poovar near Neyyattinkara here, collapsed causing injuries to several persons, police said. A senior officer of the district said that 7-8 persons were injured in the incident with one of them -- a woman -- suffering a major fracture in her leg. "The rest suffered only minor injuries," he said. The officer said the incident occurred around 9 pm on Monday when several persons got on top of the bridge which could not support their weight and slanted to one side, toppling those standing there. Titagarh Rail plans to raise up to Rs 700 cr via QIP, seeks JV partner

Engineering company Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd on Wednesday said it plans to raise up to Rs 700 crore through a Qualified Institutions Placement (QIP) and seeks a strategic partner for the shipbuilding, bridges, and defence business. In a regulatory filing, the company said proceeds from the QIP will be used to strengthen the company's position in its core businesses and to fund future growth initiatives. The company will seek the requisite approval from its shareholders for the QIP issue. Its board approved the QIP plan at its meeting and also constituted a committee for scouting a partner for the Shipbuilding, Bridges and Defence (SBD) business. Currently, wagons and rail passenger coaches are its core operation and are foraying into railway wheels through a joint venture. L&T arm bags order for Dahisar-Bhayander bridge construction in Mumbai

L&T on Tuesday said one of its subsidiaries has bagged a 'large' contract for construction of a bridge in Mumbai. The transportation infrastructure business vertical of L&T Construction has received the Dahisar-Bhayander Bridge project in Mumbai, L&T said in a statement. The project has been awarded by Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). The 4.5-kilometre bridge will significantly reduce the travel time between Dahisar and Bhayander, which currently takes more than 45 minutes. Though the company did not specify the exact value of the contract, as per its specification, a large contract ranges between Rs 2,500-5,000 crore.

Mizoram bridge collapse: 23 from Bengal feared dead, 21 bodies found

Of the 26 workers present on the under-construction railway bridge that collapsed in Mizoram's Aizawl district, 23 people are believed to be dead, though the police have recovered 21 bodies, officials said on Thursday. Two people are still missing. Among the three people injured, two were discharged after being provided first aid, while the other person was admitted to the Civil Hospital in Aizawl with a fracture in the right hand. All the 26 people working there were from the Malda district of West Bengal. The railways said the accident that took place on Wednesday was due to the collapse of a gantry, which was being launched on the under-construction bridge over the Kurung river. Over Rs 11 cr given to flood-hit people in Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar'

Uttarakhand cabinet minister Satpal Maharaj Saturday said the state government has provided immediate assistance of over Rs 11 crore to flood-hit people in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts. He added that the extensive damage caused to human life and property in the state due to the excessive rains are being assessed. Roads and bridges in the state have also suffered huge damages due to heavy rainfall, Maharaj, who is in charge of culture, tourism and PWD departments, said at a press conference here. NHAI sets up unit to review design, construction of bridges, structures

National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on Wednesday announced that it has set up a design division to review the design and construction of bridges and other structures. "For effective review of design and construction of bridges, specialised structures and tunnels, the NHAI has set up a design division that will formulate policy and guidelines for planning, designing, construction and maintenance of bridges, structures, tunnels and RE walls on national highways across the country," a road, transport and highways ministry statement said. 36 bridges in Uttarakhand found unfit for traffic; most in Pauri district

A safety audit of bridges in Uttarakhand has found that 36 of them are unfit for traffic. The audit was ordered in the wake of the bridge collapse in Gujarat's Morbi that left 135 dead. A Public Works Department (PWD) official here said Pauri district has the highest number of 16 unsafe bridges followed by eight in Tehri, five in Udham Singh Nagar, three in Haridwar and one each in Dehradun, Pithoragarh, Chamoli and Rudraprayag. Immediately after the submission of the PWD's safety audit report, a government order was issued asking the department to repair or replace the bridges at the earliest. Priority will be accorded to the reconstruction or replacement of bridges that are more frequently used by commuters, the official said.
