Canada Post says operations to resume after nearly monthlong strike

Canada Post said operations will resume at the national postal service on Tuesday after the nearly monthlong work stoppage. Workers went on strike after failing to reach a negotiated agreement with the primary postal operator in Canada over key issues, including wages, job security, and how to staff a proposed expansion into weekend delivery. The federal government moved Friday to end the stoppage after Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon announced referring the dispute to the Canada Industrial Relations Board, an independent administrative tribunal that focuses on resolving workplace disputes. However, the board determined late Sunday that negotiations are at an impasse after two days of hearings and ordered the nearly 55,000 workers to return to work. This will also extend the current collective agreement until May 22, 2025. Canada Post said it has agreed with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers to implement a 5 per cent wage increase retroactive to the day after the collective ...

Mexico, Canada, Asean gained more from US-China trade war than India: GTRI

Mexico, Canada, and 10-nation Southeast Asian bloc ASEAN benefited more from the US-China trade war than India, economic think tank GTRI said in a report. It said that India has to strengthen its local supply chains and produce critical intermediates to reduce reliance on China, while improving cost efficiency and ease of doing business to enhance competitiveness of domestic industries and increase exports to the US. With Donald Trump again becoming the US President, the evolving trade landscape offers huge opportunities for the Indian industry as he is now planning new tariffs targeting Mexico, Canada, China, and others. The US-China trade war, initiated in 2018 under President Trump with tariffs targeting key sectors, has significantly reshaped global trade flows but failed to achieve its primary goals. "Key beneficiaries of the trade war included Mexico, Canada, and ASEAN nations, which collectively accounted for 57 per cent of the growth in US imports. India also emerged as a

TikTok challenges Canadian govt order to shut down operations in country

TikTok has challenged a Canadian government order to shut down the Chinese video-sharing app's business operations in the country that was imposed over national security concerns. The company said Tuesday that it filed an application for a judicial review with the Federal Court in Vancouver on December 5, which seeks to set aside the order for TikTok to wind-up and cease its business in Canada. The Canadian federal government last month announced it was ordering the dissolution of TikTok Technology Canada Inc. after a national security review of its Chinese parent company ByteDance Ltd. The government is not blocking access to the TikTok app, which will continue to be available to Canadians. TikTok said it has 14 million users in Canada, which is about a third of the population. It has offices in Toronto and Vancouver. The wildly popular platform is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company that moved its headquarters to Singapore in 2020, but is under increasing pressure in the West.

Canadian pension fund arm co-leads $180 mn investment in India's Mintifi

A Canadian pension fund arm on Tuesday announced that it has co-led in a USD 180 million funding round in Indian supply chain finance platform Mintifi. Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan's arm Teachers' Venture Growth and South Africa's Prosus have co-led the Series E investment into the city-based Mintifi, as per a statement. Premji Invest also participated in the funding round, which includes both primary and secondary transactions, the statement said. Canadian investors, especially pension funds, have been present in India for many years and have backed a slew of entities and projects for handsome returns. The fresh funding will deepen the company's presence across key sectors and consolidate its market leadership in the downstream supply chain financing space, it said. The company, which works with entities such as Asian Paints, Varun Beverages, Parle Products, Honda, Shree Cement, TVS and Castrol, will use the funds to expand on its new offerings, including dealer management syst

If we are subsidising Canada, Mexico let them become a state of US: Trump

Observing the US is subsidising its two neighbours Canada and Mexico to the tune of USD 100 billion and USD 300 billion, respectively, incoming US President Donald Trump on Sunday said that if that is the case then these two countries better be a part of America. Trump, 78, has threatened to impose hefty tariffs on both Canada and Mexico if they don't stop the flow of illegal immigrants into the US through their territories. We're subsidising Canada to the tune of over USD 100 billion a year. We're subsidising Mexico for almost USD 300 billion. We shouldn't be subsidising. Why are we subsidising these countries? If we're going to subsidise them, let them become a state (of the US), Trump told NBC News in an interview, his first on a Sunday talk show after winning the November 5 presidential elections. We're subsidising Mexico, we're subsidising Canada, and we're subsidising many countries all over the world. All I want to do is have a level, fast, but fair playing field, he ...

Indian student fatally stabbed in Canada's Ontario, housemate arrested

A 22-year-old Indian student was stabbed to death during an altercation in Canada's Ontario province, according to the police, who have arrested and charged the victim's housemate with second-degree murder in connection with the case. Gurasis Singh, a first-year business management student at Lambton College, was stabbed on Sunday in Sarnia, police said in a statement. The police received an emergency call for a report of a stabbing at 194 Queen Street, where Singh and the 36-year-old accused Crossley Hunter were residents of a rooming house. They located Singh's dead body and took Hunter into custody. In a later statement, police said Singh and Hunter were involved in a physical altercation while in the kitchen, where the latter accessed a knife and stabbed Singh multiple times, killing him. Police said they did not believe the crime to be racially motivated "at this time". Sarnia Police Chief Derek Davis said that despite the arrest, the "complex investigation" is ongoing. "Th
